A heart-healthy diet is very essential for managing and controlling coronary artery disease (CAD). This specific type of diet can help reduce the progression of atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries). When incorporated with other heart-healthy activities, it may even help reverse or stop the worsening of the condition.
What’s better, a heart-healthy diet can help lower the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol levels. It can also help regulate the glucose level and blood pressure of the person. Additionally, this tool can also promote weight management.
To help the person lower their cholesterol levels, it is recommended for them to practice low-fat diet. It is advisable for them to restrict their total fat intake (Tran’s fats, saturated fats, mono-unsaturated, and poly-unsaturated fats) to less than 35% of total calories in a day.
They need to restrict themselves from taking Trans fats and unsaturated fats to less than 6%. It is also recommended to keep track of their dietary cholesterol intake. Preferably, people are reminded about the process of losing weight through reducing fat consumption. If the person is overweight, losing extra weight will help them to reduce the blood cholesterol as well as the blood pressure. Here are the recommended tips for eating healthy diet:
- Choose the appropriate restaurant that provides low-fat, low-cholesterol menu choices. As the customer, don’t be hesitant to make special requests.
- Don’t let the management of restaurant dictates your portion size, and don’t feel compelled to eat anything because you are paying for it.
- Request for small serving, share foods with friends or take some home for another set of meal.
- Control self from eating foods with rich sauces, gravy, butter, and salad dressings. Ask these side dishes and condiments to be served on the side so you can control the quantity.
- Avoid eating fried foods that are grilled, stir-fried, baked, and boiled.
- Select additional salad and veggies if possible.
- If you order for dessert, split it so that you can only take half of the total servings.
- At a buffet restaurant, select foods that are low in fats. If you can’t resist a few higher-fat foods then keep it small.
- If attending with potluck dinner, bring only low-fat choices. Through that, you will have a few healthy items as a replacement.
- At parties, don’t fixate yourself from foods. Instead, pay attention on the activities and people around you.
- Persuade other people to help lower your fat ingestions. If you are invited to someone’s home for dinner, ask them to include low-fat foods.
- If you eat too many high-fat containing foods, don’t feel guilty and make a binge. Just eat slowly and lightly the next day to stay on track.
Take note that when eating foods they need to make sure that they only need to consume foods that can provide sufficient amount of nutrients. Binge eating is not advisable especially for people with eating-pattern problems (anorexia). This can increase their chance from suffering of any heart diseases (CAD).
Most importantly, they also need to discuss this matter to the family because it will require cooperation and reinforcement from others. The support of the family will make a difference in terms of adjusting the prepared meal.
